RCS Traditional Group

The RCS Traditional Music Group was founded in 2008 by Ms. Edel McLaughlin and local fiddler Geraldine Bonner. They wanted to promote and encourage the students to engage in playing traditional music, song and dance. Since then, the group has gone from strength to strength having participated in many school and community events. These include performing at the YSI Speakout (2009), recording as part of the School Anthem project (2009), qualifying to participate in the Ulster Fleadh in (2010), Meitheal na Nollag CD project (2013), and playing at our school Trad for Trócaire event (2016) alongside Dinny McLaughlin and Máiréad Ní Mhaonaigh. The group meet weekly to practice and learn new repertoire. Over the years, the group have been regular participants at the national Siansa Gael Linn competition, having qualified four times to participate in the regional stages with tutors including Declan Masterson, Ciarán Ó Maonaigh and Oisín Mac Diarmada.

In July 2010, the group were invited to take part in a schools initiative involving seven schools in West Donegal to engage in workshops with members of acclaimed international group Altan. This led to a grande finale concert in Ionad Cois Locha featuring the Donegal Youth Orchestra and RTÉ show Nationwide also paid the RCS a visit during this occasion. Joining the traditional group is open to all students in all year groups at any time of the year. They play regularly at school masses, concerts and other events. Recently, they took part in a live broadcast from Dungloe town for the programme Barrscéalta on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.  They have enjoyed visits to school from many of Ireland’s best traditional artists including Manus Lunny, Ciarán and Martin Tourish, Ian Smith. Clódagh Warnock and Kathleen Boyle. All instrumental players, singers and dancers are welcome. Fáilte roimh cách!
